And another one….
Cool bit of info gleaned from Episode 77 of the Linux Outlaws podcast.
The end of show song was Vanity from the album Machina II / The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music by the Smashing Pumpkins. One of their regular listeners had emailed in with the story behind the album, and how it came to be freely available (Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 license).
(For the full story see the link above.)
Machina II, was to be the Smashing Pumpkins last studio album, and was released for free on September 5th 2000.
Yup, you guessed it, I missed that one too. Sigh.
Anyway, the story goes that Virgin Records refused to release the album and the band pressed up 25 vinyl copies. These were sent out to highly active fans, with the proviso that the album should be made available for other fans to download.
The album has since been made available on archive.org.
