Update about Updates

I have to admit, borked-ness aside, I am liking the auto-update feature of the current 2.7 series of WordPress. It does make life a little easier from an admin point of view.

Kind of.

As long as the plugins you use support  it (and the few I use do), things couldn’t be simpler.

You login, a little browny-orange thing tells you how many plugins need updating. Click on ‘Plugins’ on the left hand bar, each active or inactive plugin which requires updating, has a messag below it saying there is an update available. And you also get the choice of viewing details of the newer version or doing an automatic upgrade.

Click the upgrade link, the plugin is deactivated, the new version is downloaded directly to your live install, and then all being well the plugin is reactivated.

Job done.

It should be noted, that just like any other website upgrade the usual rules apply. Backup the site and the database before you do anything. (Tin foil hat completely optional) And unless you are feeling particularly gung-ho and fearless, dont update everything at once. Do it a bit at a time and you’ll be fine.

I have yet had any major problems, at least not when updating plugins. I’m still not entirely sure how my htaccess file became corrupt, just that it did. I guess it’s just something that I will have to keep an eye on.

Or maybe I should have just made this post on a ‘Luddite on a Skynet-esque paranoia trip’ style theme. It might have been slightly more entertaining that way.
