An evening of metal in olde Dumfries town.
(Blaze Bayley, Decadenze, Turbyne – The Live Lounge @ The Venue, Dumfries Friday 22nd May 2009)
And what a evening it was, full of metal-ly goodness!
3 bands. 6 quid.
And already you have a good deal. But what about the bands?
First up were local lads, Turbyne who’ve been regulars on the local circuit since about 2001. I’ve seen them a few times before, and they have generally put on a decent show. Tonight they were goddamn electric.
Turbyne play a kind of thrashy metal, with an impressive sense of dynamics and some damn cool melodic guitar lines. It was totally infectious, and you couldn’t help but bang your head along to them, ably demonstrated by their loyal support. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is that their set felt a little too short. I got suckered in, and was left wanting more. But hey, I was set up for the rest of night.
Next up were Wrexham’s Decadenze. Playing the kind of bluesy, scuzzed up rock n’ roll that does the job quite nicely. Playing through their set, barely pausing for breath, Decandenze impressed with a non-too-shabby display of rocking magic.
It’s fair to say that everyone was perhaps saving themselves for the headliners, who took to the stage with a vaguely Tap-esque introduction from the man himself.
I’m Blaze Bayley, this is the Blaze Bayley band, and we play metal!
Never a truer word said.
With a new band behind him, both band and man, found time to make a stop in Dumfries as part of their World and UK ‘The Tour that will not die…’ tour. Playing a set comprising material new (current album, ‘The Man Who Would Not Die’) old (spanning the previous ‘Blaze’ project), and even manging to squeeze in a couple Blaze-era Iron Maiden numbers. The most notable being their version of ‘The Clansman’, apparently played by the band for the first time in Scotland, to a rapturous response from the crowd eager to sing along.
From the first note to the last, the set was a blinder, inspiring some ‘head-banging like a loon’-type antics from my good self. And if the response from the rest of crowd was anything to go by, I wasn’t alone.
There were shit eating grins a-plenty.
The ‘Fire the DJ‘ guys have done themselves proud, putting together an excellent bill. Cheers dudes!
